Language Training for Refugees and Immigrants

Course Details
Overview
This training course is the outcome of two different research projects on the topic, the Metoikos project and the Montessori for adults project. They both deal with informal and non-formal training methods and are informed by the latest developments in language teaching.
By the end of the seminar participants are expected to have acquired the skills enabling them to:
- Develop a repertoire of teaching skills and informal techniques and the ability to judge when and how to use them;
- Develop the ability to select informal teaching techniques and learning materials and to adapt or supplement them to cater for the specific needs of groups and individual adult learners;
- Learn to recognize learners as individuals with their own learning styles, motivations and aims and act appropriately during their informal language teaching

- Language teachers with no or little language teaching experience
- Practitioners who have experience in teaching languages in non-formal contexts, i.e., NGOs or wishing to teach a language they know
- Experienced language teachers who feel they need to upgrade their practical skills
- Directors of language schools who design curricula for different learners’ groups
- Other educational or managerial staff, of language organisations, assistant or shadow teachers
Methodology
The course is based on the principles of participatory adult education, by embodying participants’ experiences and fostering the exchange of their ideas, proposals and materials. Its focus is not merely on the didactic aspect of teaching but also on participants’ social and cultural knowledge gained through education and teaching to different target groups throughout Europe. The following techniques will be used during the course: working in subgroups and pairs, role play, lectures, guided conversation, brainstorming, language and educational games and experiential activities.
Participants will be given hand-outs, original materials, lists of intercultural activities and websites regarding teaching tools.
Follow-up
On completion of the course, participants will be encouraged to form a network which will function as a meeting point where they can exchange didactic materials and proposals as well as useful ideas for promoting informal language learning in different European countries.

- Identifying the characteristics, the needs and the expectations of our learners
- Formal and informal methods and contexts
- The Language Café methodology
- Participants practise their knowledge and skills using the Language Café methodology
- The Language Exchange methodology
- Participants practise their knowledge and skills using the Language Exchange methodology
- The Montessori methodology for adults
- Participants practise their knowledge and skills using the Montessori methodology for adults
- Coping with practical problems in informal language teaching
- Reports on the visit and the course
- Evaluation of the seminar – farewell activities – creating a communication network
Tuition Fee: 450 euro for 5 days/person.
Tutors
All language teachers at the Hellenic Culture Centre are certified and experienced in teaching Greek as a second/ foreign language to adults and adolescents. They also have training and experience in online teaching and they are native speakers of Greek. You can see their CVs here.
The course takes place only as Face2face either in Santorini or Athens for 5 days.
Draft Schedule: December in Athens and May on Santorini.

Certification
Our Centre issues a Certificate of Attendance for the teacher training courses held, to be submitted to private or public organisations and calls. The Hellenic Culture Centre is an officially recognized as a Lifelong Learning Centre and a language school by the Greek Ministry of Education and Religions (EOPPEP code number 2101782/ 2018 and 2308668/2018).
Working language
English is the working language for this course. You may bring your own interpreter from English or Greek and we welcome teachers of all languages.
Cancellation Policy
- Free cancellation 90 days before the beginning of the teacher training course.
- In case of late cancellation participants can use half of their fees to register to any course of the Hellenic Culture Centre within one year time.
- Cancellation penalty: for late cancellation half of the fees for teacher training.
