Course Details

Overview

The first systematic and organized Greek Language Course for non-native or bilingual children aged 7-12 years from IPHIGENIA CENTRE FOR HELLENIC STUDIES! An initiative of teachers specialized in teaching Greek as a second and as a foreign language. Learning Greek is fun now!

Intended for

This course is intended for children 7-9 and 10-12 years old, who either have a connection with Greece or are of Greek origin. They usually are bilingual children, and they live abroad. However, some children who have recently moved to Greece are taking part too.

As an exception we may teach also children below 7, this is usually a one-to-one tuition.

LET ‘S GO, KIDS a! (7-9 years old)

LET ‘S GO, KIDS b! (10-12 years old)

LET ‘S GO, KIDS – Greek Mythology and History (9-13 years old)

Explore the most wonderful myths of the world, be familiar with the gods and goddesses, the heroes and heroines of Ancient Greece. Discover the connections of Greek Mythology with the Modern world through etymology and modern legends and customs.

Methodology

Synchronous and asynchronous learning: the children meet the teacher once or twice a week in a synchronous Skype meeting, where they practice speaking, reading, and learn about Greek culture. They have access 24/7 to our Moodle educational platform with all learning materials and activities, videos, audios, dictionaries, and other resources. The teacher assigns some homework, but they may also follow their own pace, according to the way they are exposed to Greek and the help they may get from the family: they can read texts, listen to audio files, work with different activities and games, and watch selected videos.

Content

Our moto is “Greek is fun!” We want our students to learn while playing.

Topics of interest to children (family, home, garden, animals, games, travel, music, technology, fairy tales, sports, celebrations, etc.)

Teaching materials focused on the four communication skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and cultural awareness. Development of metacognitive skills.

Sub-sections of each lesson: listening, speaking, reading, writing, painting, singing, playing theater, playing games, learning words, learning grammar and spelling, what I already knew and what I learned in this lesson.

Games interesting and interactive with the use of modern technologies and the use of the internet

Texts specifically written for children living in today’s multicultural world. We want to familiarize our children with the fact that they live in a multicultural society where the Greek culture has its own special place. Thus, we have introduced children characters that are coming from different countries.

NOTES:

1. To find out your level in Greek, it would be good to do one of the grading tests that you can find above, in the Grading Test button. Keep in mind that it is best to print it out and write it by hand, without seeking any help. The test is gradually becoming more difficult. So, you do not have to finish it. Then scan it and send it to us, so we can suggest you the best course option that suits your level.

2. To identify your level as well as to create your personal Learning Path, make an appointment with the Director of the Centre, Mrs. Ifigenia Georgiadou

ifigenia@iphigenia.edu.gr here

3. You will only pay after we find the right day and time for your lesson.
