Course Details
Overview
We now initiated the Online Ancient Greek Language course, which was offered only as a face-to-face course in the previous years. In this course we come in contact with Ancient Greek language and we study texts in their social context. We develop reading skills and we translate the texts into English. We discuss their content and their messages.
Objectives: This course aims at familiarizing non-native students with the Ancient Greek language, the Ancient World, and its values.
Intended for
This course is intended for
- Students of ancient Greek at Universities abroad
- Anyone interested in learning Ancient Greek
- Trainee teachers of Ancient Greek
Methodology
Synchronous and asynchronous meetings: You meet the teacher once or twice a week in a synchronous Skype meeting, where you practice translation, reading, and learn about grammar, syntax, and culture. You have access 24/7 to our Moodle educational platform with all learning materials and activities, videos, audios, dictionaries, and other resources. The teacher assigns your homework, but you may also follow your own pace, according to your week obligations: you can read texts, listen to audio files, work with different activities and exercises, and watch videos.
Content
This course includes learning the alphabet, the Erasmian and Modern Greek pronunciation, learning about the different Ancient Greek dialects and about historical topics connected to the texts.
We are going to translate mainly texts in Classical Greek (notably the Attic dialect of the 5th century BC). An anthology of texts by writers such as Xenophon, Thucydides, Lysias, Plato, Aristotle and others is the corpus we use. Homer, Lyrical poets, and Herodotus are included too. Every student may have different learning needs, which we try to address.

NOTES:
1. To find out your level in Greek, it would be good to do one of the grading tests that you can find above, in the Grading Test button. Keep in mind that it is best to print it out and write it by hand, without seeking any help. The test is gradually becoming more difficult. So, you do not have to finish it. Then scan it and send it to us, so we can suggest you the best course option that suits your level.
2. To identify your level as well as to create your personal Learning Path, make an appointment with the Director of the Centre, Mrs. Ifigenia Georgiadou
ifigenia@iphigenia.edu.gr here
3. You will only pay after we find the right day and time for your lesson.
